Replacing an Old or Wrong Dryer Cord

"Read this before you get the wrong dryer cord!"

Is your dryer cord giving your problems? It just might be, if you’re going to be using a newer model dryer in an older style house. Why will this be a problem? Because older houses have outlets designed for only three prongs, while modern drying machines have four pronged cords. Are you out of luck? Not yet, fortunately! You can convert either the outlet or the cord itself, depending on which is more comfortable to you. Of course, you can also hire someone, but why not save your money?

Now, the type of machine doesn’t really matter here There’s a range of models that heat your clothes dry obviously, but they all use the same type of plug. Whether you’re using a Maytag, GE, Whirlpool, or some other brand of appliance this should be applicable. Of course, this is also assuming you’re using an electric machine, as gas will not really be worrying about electricity much.

So how do you complete this seemingly complicated task? I recommend changing the actual plug instead of the outlet because it’s slightly easier. You’ll need a screwdriver to remove the plate on the face. Then you’re going to actually take off the older cord, and replace it with a new cord. If you go into an electric supply shop just ask them for 10/3 SJ cord. You decide how long you need it to be. One of the wires of the cord (the center one) goes into the center of the plug. The other two cords connect on the outer parts of the plug.

You’re almost done. You need to attach your new wire to the back of the drying machine. This is pretty self explanatory, but you want to make absolutely sure that it’s properly secured. When all this is done, you can put the safety plate that you removed at the beginning back on the front. Try out your new setup to verify that it works. If it does, you just saved yourself a lot of money by not having to hire someone. If it doesn’t, now would be the time to get professional help.
